Memories of México

The mayonnaise mistake

One time, whilst we were doing a food shop and perusing the condiments, Kass randomly said ‘Mayonesa McCormick’ in a sing-song-y kinda way.

Back in 2009, Pedro Sola, one of the hosts of the tabloid talk show Ventaneando (which I think means ‘person looking through a window’, like a gossip, but Kass thinks it could be ‘airing out’ a la opening a window, as in, airing out gossip), was doing a sponsored spot for Hellmann’s’ mayonnaise.

To demonstrate just how delectable Hellman’s is, Pedro dolloped some onto a chicken salad, while saying: “El toque especial está en ponerle…”

“The special touch is adding…”

But then, instead of saying ‘Hellman’s’, Pedro belts out ‘Mayonesa McCormick’ in a manner so divine, the two mayonnaises became instantly and eternally quantum-entangled.

A couple of seconds-that-felt-like-years passed before Pedro realised, apologised, and corrected course, but, even as the Hellman’s logo and some anthropomorphic lettuce appeared on screen, it was already too late.

More than a decade later, people still regularly chorus ‘Mayonesaaa McCormiiick’ every time they say the brand’s name.

Pedro didn’t get fired, but he did have 75,000 pesos docked from his pay over the course of several months. That’s about 3,500 quid, or 4,400 bucks.

Disappointingly, McCormick have (as I write this) yet to get Pedro in for a commercial.
